Yes, you are right. It is a rather subjective statement. Some considerable research would be required in order to be able to scientifically establish that iPhone customers have more status anxiety, on average, than users of any other type of phone.
What I originally wrote was: “In most cases, a decision to buy a thousand-dollar phone is one driven largely by status anxiety.” I think that’s highly likely to be true, but again, it would still require a considerable about of research to be able to claim it as proven fact.
But then, this article is intended to present a speculative opinion. It doesn’t pretend to be presenting the conclusions of any scientifically-conducted research.
