As I understand it, a lot of people will try to distinguish between a person’s ‘sex’ and a person’s ‘gender.’

So, if you get a man who decides he wants to be a ‘woman,’ we’re now expected to refer to ‘him’ as a ‘her.’ And if you say ‘She’s not really a woman,’ that will offend a lot of people. But if you say, ‘She’s not really a female,’ you might offend slightly fewer people, because ‘female’ might be taken as referring to ‘her’ sex, rather than ‘her’ ‘gender.’ But if you say, ‘He’s not really a female,’ you’re getting into major pronoun controversy.

It can get confusing! :)
